Winter weddings can sometimes get a bad rap. People worry about the cold, the light, they worry about everything running late because the days are shorter. And honestly, those worries are valid!
When Sarah Louise Wedding Planner got in touch to ask if we were available for Lauren and Tom’s wedding, we immediately checked the date twice. December. Just five weeks away and only days before Christmas. Immediate thoughts (honestly); winter weddings do not offer much flexibility, the light disappears quickly and timelines have to be realistic. Even for confident and experienced creatives, that kind of turnaround can feel like a challenge.
What we did not expect was how effortless it would feel on the day and that was entirely down to planning.

The ceremony and reception were in two separate locations, 45 minutes apart. In summer, that is manageable. In winter, that can feel risky. Travel eats into light, delays can snowball and one small thing can shift the entire timeline but this day never slipped.
Sarah Louise, the Wedding Planner had literally thought through every single detail. Timings were very realistic, suppliers were aligned and our transition from the morning prep location of Down Hall to the Church was calm, leaving us plenty of time to setup. There was no sense of scrambling to catch up, we had enough time to capture exteriors of the venue, gorgeous portraits for Lauren, group shots with the wedding party for Tom and so much more.
Calm changes everything.
As creatives we always show up prepared, we often build timelines with our couples, we scout locations and observe the light. We plan portrait windows and guide gently where needed but when there is a dedicated planner managing the day, the pressure shifts.
We are not coordinating suppliers, we are not answering logistical questions, we are not calculating whether the next part of the day is running behind. We are doing exactly what we are paid to do, create and capture all the best moments of the celebration. That extra mental space means we notice more, we move more freely and we can push a little further creatively because we are not being pulled in five directions.
For all weddings the margins matter but for a winter wedding to feel stress-free and full of joy, margins are crucial.
The church ceremony was framed by candlelight and the florals on the exterior of the church, as-well as the interior were rich. Red roses spanned the entire aisle, making it feel so romantic and elegant.
We feel it is also important to emphasise how smoothly everything flowed. Guests were never left standing around. They stepped into the church, and when the ceremony ended, they moved straight out into confetti before anyone had time to notice the cold.
As they made their way over to the marquee, mulled wine was waiting for them at the gates. Just enough to take the edge off before the chill settled in. By the time they walked inside, the energy had already built. The marquee felt warm and inviting, and the transition from outside to inside was effortless. Now that’s how you plan a winter wedding!
When guests are relaxed and the day has flowed effortlessly, the evening takes on a different feel. That is exactly what happened here, the energy carried right through into the early hours. Lauren and Tom’s family and friends were completely present. All we felt was genuine excitement and a lot of love, and those are the weddings that photograph and film beautifully.

As we mentioned, Lauren and Tom chose to host their reception in a marquee. Some might see that as ambitious for December. In truth, when a marquee is designed with intention, it stops feeling like a temporary structure and starts feeling like a considered, luxury space.
Eve Francesca Designs, the amazing florist, created something that felt sophisticated and festive. Deep red roses, draping that softened the space and alongside Sarah and the rest of the team, they created a space where nothing felt temporary, it all felt very considered.
That is the difference between hoping a space works and designing it so it does.

If you are planning a winter wedding in the UK, especially a marquee wedding, do not underestimate the value of a planner and the right team behind you to make the impossible, possible.
Winter is not the problem. Disorganisation is. When you have someone in your corner, foreseeing issues before they arise weeks before the event, overseeing the flow of the day, protecting your timeline and keeping every supplier aligned, the result is freedom. For you and frankly, for your creative team.
Lauren and Tom trusted Sarah Louise completely, and that trust filtered through the entire celebration making our jobs a breeze. We absolutely loved capturing this wedding, which has proved to us that winter weddings are a dream to capture when you are working alongside an A team.
Their December wedding felt elegant, joyful but all without chaos and it reminded us again that the best weddings are the ones where everything has been thought through and planned for, so everyone else can simply enjoy it.
Because with the right team around you, December can be one of the most beautiful times to get married. If your considering a UK winter wedding but feel overwhelmed by the ‘what-if’s’ … we have just what you need, here is the list of suppliers that Lauren and Tom had behind their perfect day.
